Rowsley to Carlton Lees loop

This walk was new to us, and it had a great mix of tracks, fields, woodland, country roads and walking along little streams and then by the magnificent River Derwent. 8.5km. Total ascent 215m

Long incline (worth it!) on a woodland track

Scenic views across the valley from the top of Manners Wood. Perfect picnic spot!

We started off in Rowsley by Cauldwell’s Mill, which has a nice café, gift shop and flour shop, selling their well-know flour and oats. When you begin the walk it takes you up (a fairly long incline) via lovely woodland part of the Haddon Hall estate, once you reach the top you get to walk across the fields with scenic views over the valley and then drops you along the river to the picture perfect Carlton Lees village, part of the Chatsworth Estate. After which a slightly muddy but very pretty walk back along the River Derwent to Rowsley.

As it is March, the river was full of water and the weather was rather mixed. We only saw a handful of other walkers, but spotted some lovely wild garlic, snowdrops and signs of spring.

Path leading into to tiny hamlet of Carlton Lees

Fields full of sheep leading down from Carlton Lees to River Derwent along a pretty stream.
